WTA 125 Series Crowns Cristian and Danilovic as Champions

This week`s WTA 125 tournaments saw top-seeded players dominate the singles competitions.

At the Puerto Vallarta Open in Mexico, Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, the No. 1 seed, clinched the title. She defeated Linda Fruhvirtova from the Czech Republic in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, in the final match played on Sunday`s hard court.

Despite the straight-set victory, Cristian spent 2 hours and 12 minutes overcoming the resistance of 19-year-old Fruhvirtova, who had recently reached the third round of the Miami Open as a qualifier.

Cristian, aged 26, also achieved a third-round appearance at Indian Wells earlier in the month, during this year`s Sunshine Double. Currently ranked No. 72 in the world, Cristian has won eight of her last ten matches and is set to reach her career-high ranking of No. 57 on Monday.

The doubles title at the Puerto Vallarta Open was claimed by the American team of Hanna Chang and Christina McHale. They won against Maya Joint and Ena Shibahara with a score of 2-6, 6-2, [10-7]. McHale, a former Top 25 player, has recently returned to professional tennis after a two-year break.

Earlier on Sunday, Olga Danilovic of Serbia, the top seed, secured the singles title at the Megasaray Hotels Open in Antalya, Turkey. Danilovic defeated Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva of Andorra 6-2, 6-3 in the final on clay.

Danilovic, 24 years old, is projected to achieve a new career-high ranking of No. 35 on Monday. This comes after her impressive performance in the second of three WTA 125 events in Antalya over three weeks. (Anca Todoni was the winner of the previous week`s tournament in Antalya.)

Throughout this week`s tournament, Danilovic maintained a strong lead in her matches, never losing more than three games in any set. Her final victory lasted 94 minutes. She now holds a total of two WTA 125 singles titles, matching her two WTA 250 singles titles.

The Antalya doubles title for this week was awarded to Maria Lourdes Carle from Argentina and Simona Waltert of Switzerland. They triumphed over Maja Chwalinska and Anastasia Detiuc with a score of 3-6, 7-5, [10-3] in the final on Saturday. Chwalinska and Detiuc were the doubles champions at the Antalya event last week.
