Former MLS player Aaron Boupendza has died at the young age of 28 after a fall from the 11th floor of a building in China. The Gabon national team announced the devastating news of Boupendza`s death on Wednesday.
At the time of his passing, Boupendza was playing for the Chinese Super League club Zhejiang FC. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Zhejiang FC stated that he died at his residence. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and the club has pledged full cooperation with the authorities.
Boupendza played for FC Cincinnati for parts of two seasons in the MLS. During his time with the club in 2023, he played 10 games and scored six goals. The following season, he scored two goals in 14 appearances. His contract with FC Cincinnati was terminated in August 2024.
FC Cincinnati released a statement on social media expressing their sorrow over Boupendza`s death.
`We are deeply saddened to learn about the tragic death of former FC Cincinnati forward Aaron Boupendza earlier today at his home in China,` the team shared in their statement. `Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones. He was a cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family, and we extend our deepest condolences to everyone who knew him.`
Boupendza also proudly represented his home country of Gabon in 35 international matches, scoring eight goals. One of these goals was during the 2016 African Nations Championship.
