Three American players had already progressed to the Round of 16 at the Credit One Charleston Open on Tuesday, and the positive momentum continued for the American contingent on Wednesday as four more secured their spots with convincing victories.
Leading the charge were No. 1 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 4 seed Emma Navarro, who both conceded a mere 10 games combined in their opening matches of this clay-court season.
Pegula, arriving fresh from her runner-up finish at the Miami Open final against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, swept the first eight games en route to a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over qualifier Iryna Shymanovich. Meanwhile, Charleston native Navarro defeated her fellow American Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 6-3 in one of two all-American clashes of the day.
Joining them in the last 16 are No. 15 seed Ashlyn Krueger and unseeded Sofia Kenin, both also claiming straight-set wins. Krueger, the reigning Charleston doubles champion alongside Sloane Stephens, defeated Katie Volynets 6-3, 7-6(4) in the other all-American matchup on Wednesday. Kenin delivered a commanding performance, ousting No. 17 seed Belinda Bencic with a score of 6-0, 6-3.
