Golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have joined forces to revolutionize the sport with TGL, a cutting-edge, technology-driven golf league designed for a modern audience.

In partnership with the PGA Tour, TGL offers an unprecedented viewing experience, bringing fans closer to the action than ever before. Teams of elite golfers will compete in a purpose-built, high-tech arena, promising intense and engaging matches.

What is TGL Golf?

Launched in August 2022, TGL is a groundbreaking 3-on-3 golf league. Six teams, each composed of four PGA Tour stars, will participate in fast-paced, two-hour matches. These matches will be held at the SoFi Center, a state-of-the-art venue specifically designed for TGL in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

What Does TGL Stand For?

TGL is short for Tomorrow`s Golf League. This name reflects the vision of TMRW Sports, the company behind TGL, founded by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley. TMRW Sports is dedicated to creating technology-focused ventures within sports and entertainment.

How Do TGL Matches Work?

Each TGL match consists of two exciting sessions:

  1. Triples: A nine-hole, 3-on-3 alternate shot format kicks off each match.
  2. Singles: Following the triples session, players compete head-to-head in six single holes, with each golfer playing two holes.

The SoFi Center course is a technological marvel, covering roughly the size of a football field (97 yards by 50 yards). Key features include:

  • Real Grass Surfaces: Players tee off from authentic grass tee boxes, fairways, rough, and sand, hitting towards a massive simulation screen, over 20 times larger than standard golf simulators.
  • Dynamic Greens: The tech-enhanced green incorporates jacks that dynamically alter the slope, ensuring varied and challenging play on every hole.

Scoring and Gameplay Highlights:

  • Points Per Hole: Each hole is worth one point.
  • Overtime: In case of a tie after regulation, an overtime period decides the winner, similar to a penalty shootout in soccer. Golfers compete head-to-head until a team places two shots closer to the pin than their opponents.
  • Shot Clock: A 40-second shot clock adds to the pace and excitement. Players must shoot within this time, or their team incurs a one-stroke penalty. This timing is based on USGA recommendations for pace of play.
  • Timeouts: Each team gets four timeouts per match, two per session. Timeouts do not carry over between sessions. Timeouts can be called by the team about to play until the shot clock expires, or by the opposing team until the player addresses the ball. No back-to-back timeouts are allowed by the same team on a single shot.
  • Referee: A referee is present on the course to enforce rules, with an additional official monitoring from a booth.
  • Mic`d Up Players: All golfers wear microphones, enhancing the fan experience by providing live audio from the course.

TGL events are strategically scheduled to complement the PGA Tour calendar, as part of their partnership. Weekly matches build towards playoffs, culminating in the SoFi Cup championship.

TGL Points System

TGL`s points system mirrors the NHL, awarding points each regular season match to determine SoFi Cup standings.

  • Regulation or Overtime Win: 2 points
  • Overtime Loss: 1 point

The top four teams advance to a single-elimination playoff semifinal and a best-of-three championship series.
