Suns Fire Mike Budenholzer After Playoff Miss

The Phoenix Suns have announced the firing of head coach Mike Budenholzer on Monday. This decision marks the third consecutive season where the Suns have dismissed their head coach. Previously, Monty Williams was fired in 2023 after a second-round playoff exit, and Frank Vogel was let go after a first-round sweep last season. Now, the Suns are in search of their fourth head coach in just four seasons.

In a statement released by the team, the Suns stated, `Competing at the highest level remains our goal, and we failed to meet expectations this season. Our fans deserve better. Change is needed.`

Budenholzer, an NBA champion with the Milwaukee Bucks, a two-time Coach of the Year, and an Arizona native, had signed a five-year contract with the Suns last offseason. The initial expectation was that his coaching style, known for defensive strength and smart shot selection, would be a good fit for the Suns, particularly with their experienced roster needing defensive improvement.

However, the partnership did not pan out as hoped. Despite an initial 8-1 record, the Suns were eliminated from playoff contention before the end of the regular season, finishing with a 36-46 record. Reports of tension had emerged, including suggestions that Budenholzer had asked Devin Booker to adjust his vocal leadership. Following a season considered highly disappointing, the Suns opted for yet another coaching change.

This coaching change comes as the Suns face an offseason filled with roster uncertainty. There is widespread expectation that Kevin Durant will be traded, and Bradley Beal could also be moved if a suitable trade can be arranged given his no-trade clause. The apparent aim is to rebuild a winning team around Devin Booker while he is still in his prime. However, this will be a challenging task due to the Suns` limited draft assets and financial constraints.

Meanwhile, Mike Budenholzer is expected to be a sought-after candidate in the head coaching market this offseason. With vacancies already at Denver and Memphis, and Sacramento also having made a mid-season change, Budenholzer`s strong coaching record with Atlanta and Milwaukee makes him a likely candidate for several teams.
