Jasmine Paolini and Emma Navarro, both seeded players, lived up to expectations at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Tuesday evening. They swiftly won their first-round matches at this WTA 500 event held on indoor clay in Stuttgart, Germany.

Italian player Paolini, seeded No. 5, only needed 1 hour and 4 minutes to defeat Eva Lys with a score of 6-2, 6-1 in the first match of the night session. This victory brings Paolini closer to repeating her quarterfinal appearance from last year`s tournament.

Lys, ranked No. 68 in the world, entered the Stuttgart tournament as the top-ranked German player for the first time in her career. However, this status wasn`t enough against Paolini, who dominated the return games on Tuesday.

In her post-match interview on court, Paolini apologized to the German crowd, who responded with applause, saying, `[Lys] is such a nice girl, and I’m sorry [to] you guys. I have to do my job, as best as I can!`

Paolini demonstrated strong return skills, winning 73 percent of points on Lys`s first serve. She successfully converted 6 out of 8 break points. Her record against Lys improves to 2-0 (4-0 in sets).

In the second round, Paolini, currently ranked No. 6 globally, will face another German player, Jule Niemeier, who entered as a wild card. Paolini has won both of their previous encounters in 2022.

Later in the evening, American No. 7 seed Navarro made an impressive debut at the Stuttgart tournament, easily defeating Brazilian player Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-0.

In their 1 hour and 16-minute match, Navarro hit 24 winners compared to Haddad Maia`s eight. Navarro capitalized on four out of nine break points and did not lose her serve throughout the match.

Navarro commented after her win, `I’ve had a lot of long matches this year, and a lot of three-set matches. To finish this one a bit quicker feels great. I’m happy with my performance… This is my first tournament on red clay this year, so I’m embracing it and enjoying myself out here.`

Navarro had previously lost to Haddad Maia twice on clay last year, making Tuesday`s victory a significant turnaround. Ranked No. 11 worldwide, Navarro continues her pursuit of her second WTA 500 title this year, having won the WTA 500 Merida trophy on hard court in March.

Unfortunately for Haddad Maia, this loss marks her ninth consecutive defeat since reaching the third round of the 2025 Australian Open.

In the upcoming second round, Navarro is set to play against Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 Roland Garros champion, in their first-ever career match.
