Stephen Curry Outlines NBA Ownership Aspirations, Aims to Follow in Michael Jordan’s Footsteps

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry plans to remain involved with the NBA after retiring, expressing a desire to move into team ownership. Currently under contract until the 2026-27 season, Curry intends to follow the path of Michael Jordan by acquiring a stake in a franchise once his illustrious playing career ends.

Michael Jordan holds the unique distinction of being the only former NBA player to have held a majority ownership position in a league franchise. He owned the Charlotte Hornets for 13 years before selling his majority stake in 2023 and transitioning to a minority partner role.

Speaking to CNBC, Curry commented on Jordan`s pioneering role: “He might be the only one in our generation who has sat in that seat and done it that way.” Curry shared his motivation: “The idea of being a part of an ownership group and the right opportunity that allows me to have an impact on how a franchise should be operated — how you`re going after true winning, like we`ve done here with the Warriors — that`s something I`m excited about pursuing.” He added, “Obviously, as an active player, you can`t participate in that level until you`re done. So you`ll see me in the seat somewhere down the road.”

Acquiring an NBA team requires a significant investment. According to Forbes` latest valuations, the Golden State Warriors are the league`s most valuable franchise, estimated at $8.8 billion. The least valuable team on the list is the Memphis Grizzlies, valued at $3 billion.

Two franchises have recently been involved in sale discussions. In March, the Boston Celtics ownership agreed to sell a stake to Bill Chisholm in a deal valuing the team at $6.1 billion, a record for a North American professional sports franchise. The Portland Trail Blazers are also expected to be sold, following the death of owner Paul Allen in 2018, who directed his estate to sell the team.

It remains uncertain whether Curry will aim for a majority stake in a team or opt for a minority investment position.

“Obviously there are levels to this,” Curry noted.

Over his career, Curry has become one of the sport`s defining figures, earning four championships and two MVP awards. He has spent his entire illustrious career with the Warriors, setting numerous franchise and league records, most notably becoming the NBA`s all-time leader in three-pointers made and revolutionizing the game with his shooting prowess.

Financial analysis site Spotrac reports that Curry`s career earnings are projected to exceed $410 million through the 2024-25 season. His contract ensures significant future income, with salaries just under $60 million next season and over $62 million when he is 38.
