Serena Williams` last-minute tweet on X on Monday evening felt ominous:
“And after one meltdown,” she posted, “we are finally on our way to the Met Gala.”
The exact reason for the “meltdown” remained unknown (we remind you that the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is also a mother of two), but fashion critics unanimously declared: it was worth it.
The 43-year-old Williams created a sensation at the annual Costume Institute fashion summit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, stepping before the cameras in an icy, pale-blue gown with a bold sheer panel on the leg and a satin silver cape resembling a duvet. For her seventh Met Gala appearance, she collaborated with the Italian luxury brand Moncler.
Of course, it was a custom outfit designed by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, who accompanied Williams on the blue carpet. The dress featured bare shoulders and a fitted silhouette. The long skirt was adorned with a sheer abstract insert with fine metallic threads creating a shimmering hue. A long, light blue cape made of Moncler`s signature material, resembling a puffer, complemented the look; it was worn around the wrists to emphasize the dress`s drapery.
Williams showcased a very chic golden bob hairstyle, styled in 1920s-era waves, created by Angela Meadows. The look was complemented by Fred Leighton angel wing earrings with diamonds, along with a matching barrette, bracelet, and rings.
Williams, she said, felt like a modern-day Cinderella.
Later, she shared with followers: “The main highlight of my night, obviously, was Rihanna. It`s no secret that I adore her. She is so magnificent – literally the most magnificent. I am obsessed with her.”
And also Pharrell told me: “Stop caring about what people say.”
