The WTA announced on Wednesday that the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is scheduled to host a tournament on the Hologic WTA Tour in September 2025, marking the tour`s return after a 25-year absence. The event, designated as the WTA 250 SP Open, is planned for the week of September 8th, taking the place of the Jasmin Open held in Monastir. This tournament will be played on outdoor hard courts and will feature a main draw of 32 players in singles and 16 teams in doubles.
Sao Paulo`s last appearance on the WTA calendar was in 2000, when it hosted the Brasil Open. That year, Hungarian player Rita Kuti-Kis claimed the singles title, while the Argentine duo of Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez were the doubles champions.
The decision to bring the Hologic WTA Tour back to Sao Paulo comes on the heels of a dynamic start to the 2025 season. So far, 15 different players have won singles titles across WTA 250, 500, and 1000 events. A notable highlight includes Mirra Andreeva`s historic victory, becoming the youngest player to ever win a WTA 1000 title.
This exciting early season, coupled with the recent launch of the WTA`s updated brand identity, has contributed to significant growth in social media engagement. By the end of March, WTA followers had increased by 25% compared to the previous year, and total video views saw a substantial rise of 163% in the first quarter.
