Rice Key for Arsenal: Analysis of Brentford Draw

LONDON — Arsenal`s recent lineup changes, considering their upcoming match, notably included Declan Rice in the starting eleven. Despite deserving rest, Rice`s presence was more than just fan appreciation. His consistent performance has become vital for the team.

When Bukayo Saka`s injury coincided with Martin Odegaard`s dip in form, Arsenal needed a driving force. Declan Rice stepped up, proving his versatility as both a defensive and attacking midfielder. He`s become crucial in Arsenal`s attack, especially when other offensive options are limited.

Rice is shaping Arsenal`s playing style. Against Brentford, in a 1-1 draw, Arsenal`s attacks, particularly crosses and set-pieces, were energized by Rice`s dynamism. He almost scored directly from a corner, following his previous free-kick goals.

Arsenal`s opening goal against Brentford perfectly illustrated Rice`s impact. He carried the ball from his own half, evaded a challenge, and set up Thomas Partey for a shot and goal. This solo counter-attack came shortly after Rice had covered significant distance in a previous game, despite a foot issue. Coach Arteta described it as an `unbelievable action`.

Arsenal doesn`t often rely on counter-attacking football, but they might utilize it against Real Madrid. If space opens up, expect Rice to exploit it with his speed and drive.

Arteta wants to see more of this from Rice, depending on the opponent`s tactics. He noted the Brentford game`s opening goal originated from a set-piece situation with space to exploit after breaking Brentford’s press.

At just 26, Rice is consistently improving. He`s adding new dimensions to his game. While he possessed the ability to make runs and passes at West Ham, he now uses these skills more frequently and effectively at Arsenal. His shooting accuracy has also improved since moving to North London.

Rice has evolved into a complete midfielder. His touches in the opponent`s box, expected goals, created chances, and forward carries have all increased notably since Saka`s injury. He`s effectively filling the void left by Saka`s absence.

Rice mirrors Arsenal`s current situation. While their attack is functional, there`s room for improvement. Against Brentford, Arsenal had 14 shots but only 0.82 expected goals. Defensively, they are strong, often limiting opponents to minimal chances. However, despite strong defensive performances in seven Premier League games, they`ve only won three of them, drawing four.

Brentford`s equalizer, a flicked goal by Wissa from a cross, highlighted defensive vulnerability. Adding to Arsenal`s challenges, Jorginho`s injury left them with 10 men at the end of the game. Injuries have been a recurring theme for Arsenal this season.

Despite setbacks, the season won`t be a failure if Rice continues to perform at this level, especially when Saka and Odegaard return to peak form. Reducing the burden on Rice could unlock even greater potential for him and the team.
