Raducanu Advances to Miami Open Quarterfinals

MIAMI — Emma Raducanu, known for her historic 2021 US Open victory as a qualifier, is making waves again. After overcoming a series of injuries, the 22-year-old is eager to forge a new chapter in her career, and the 2025 Miami Open is proving to be an excellent stage.

Raducanu, representing Great Britain, continued her strong performance in the tournament by defeating No. 17 seed Amanda Anisimova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. This victory propels her into her first-ever WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

“I’m most proud of rediscovering my competitive spirit and fighting for every point,” Raducanu shared with reporters. “This hunger and determination, which I felt was missing in recent times, has been key this week.”

Raducanu revealed that adjustments to her routine, including shorter warmups and incorporating soccer and frisbee, have contributed to her success.

“I step onto the court knowing I’ll give my all on every point,” Raducanu explained. “This mindset has been effective. I’m also trying to overthink less during matches and allow my natural creativity to flow, which is when I play my best tennis.”

In her last two matches, Raducanu has impressively won 24 out of 29 games, showcasing her dominant form.

Her efficiency was evident in the match against Anisimova, where she matched her winners and unforced errors at eight each. In contrast, Anisimova had 12 winners but a high 37 unforced errors. The match was completed in just 69 minutes.

This marks only the second time in Raducanu`s career that she has won four consecutive WTA Tour main-draw matches. The first instance was her remarkable US Open run, where she won seven main-draw matches and ten including qualifying rounds.

Anisimova herself is experiencing a comeback. After finishing 2024 ranked No. 36, she won a title at the Doha WTA 1000 event, improving her ranking to a career-high of No. 17 with an 11-4 record this year.

Raducanu`s victories over Anisimova and No. 8 seed Emma Navarro mark the second time she has defeated two Top 20 players at the same event. The first time was at the US Open, where she defeated Belinda Bencic and Maria Sakkari on her path to the title.

Next Match: Pegula Raducanu`s quarterfinal opponent is No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula. Pegula advanced by defeating No. 23 seed Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-3 on Monday.

Pegula has consistently performed well in Miami, reaching the quarterfinals or better in the last four years, with semifinal appearances in 2022 and 2023.

Pegula`s victory on Monday was also swift. Despite falling behind 3-0 in the second set after winning the first, she recovered to win the next six games, securing the match in 1 hour and 23 minutes.

Raducanu and Pegula have an even head-to-head record, with one win each. Pegula won their 2022 Cincinnati hard court match, while Raducanu won on grass at Eastbourne last year.
