Play at the Mutua Madrid Open was abruptly halted on Monday following a widespread power outage. The incident occurred on a day when all 16 remaining women`s singles players were scheduled to compete in the fourth round.
Media outlets reported that the power failure extended across Spain and affected large parts of Europe, impacting millions. While the exact cause was not immediately known, early reports suggested issues within the European electricity grid were responsible.
The blackout, which began after noon local time, struck shortly after the completion of two of the eight women`s fourth-round matches.
In the matches that finished before the power cut, fourth seed Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Additionally, seventh seed Mirra Andreeva advanced by winning her match against qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4.
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek was among the players waiting for play to resume. She was seen in the darkened players` lounge along with members of her team, awaiting the completion of a suspended men`s singles match between Grigor Dimitrov and qualifier Jacob Fearnley on Manolo Santana Stadium.
Following the prolonged disruption, all remaining matches scheduled for Monday were officially cancelled and postponed, with play set to resume on Tuesday.
