Power outage halts play at Madrid; remaining matches pushed to Tuesday

Update (5:00 pm local time): All matches originally scheduled for Monday were subsequently canceled.

In Madrid, a power outage struck the Mutua Madrid Open on a day when all remaining 16 women`s singles players were scheduled to compete.

Media outlets reported the power failure was widespread, affecting not only Spain but also large parts of Europe and millions of people. The initial cause was unclear, though early information suggested problems with the European electricity grid.

The blackout, which started after noon, occurred just after two of the eight women`s fourth-round matches had finished.

Fourth seed Coco Gauff had completed her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Belinda Bencic, and seventh seed Mirra Andreeva won her match against qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek was seen in the darkened players` lounge, conversing with her team. She was waiting for the men`s match between Grigor Dimitrov and qualifier Jacob Fearnley in Manolo Santana Stadium to conclude, which was also suspended.
