Osaka wins Saint Malo 125 title; Galfi extends winning streak at Vic 125

This week`s WTA 125 tournaments saw Naomi Osaka successfully utilize a wild card entry in France to capture a title, while Dalma Galfi and Bianca Andreescu celebrated victories in Spain.

Here`s a summary of the key results from the clay-court WTA 125 events held over the weekend:

Osaka Secures Saint Malo Title with Wild Card Entry

Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka of Japan claimed her first career WTA 125 title on Sunday. Competing in Saint Malo, France, she defeated Kaja Juvan of Slovenia with a score of 6-1, 7-5 in the final of the L`Open 35 de Saint Malo.

This victory marks Osaka`s first singles title at any level since her triumph at the 2021 Australian Open. Her decorated career includes four Grand Slam titles and three additional titles on the Hologic WTA Tour.

Accepting a wild card into the event as the No. 2 seed, Osaka navigated the draw effectively. She dropped one set apiece against French players Diane Parry and Leolia Jeanjean but advanced smoothly through her other matches.

Interestingly, this wasn`t Osaka`s first appearance in a WTA 125 final. She finished as the runner-up to Yaroslava Shvedova at the WTA 125 Hua Hin event back in 2015, almost a decade prior.

A notable mention goes to Kaja Juvan, a former Top 100 player who recently returned to the tour in January after a 12-month break and quickly reached a WTA 125 final.

In the Saint Malo doubles final, the top-seeded pair of Maia Lumsden and Makoto Ninomiya secured the title. They defeated the No. 2 seeds Oksana Kalashnikova and Angelica Moratelli 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday.

Galfi Extends Streak, Wins Catalonia Open in Vic

Dalma Galfi of Hungary has now claimed her second consecutive WTA 125 title, adding the Catalonia Open in Vic, Spain, to her victory in Oeiras last month.

On Saturday, Galfi earned the Vic title by defeating Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland convincingly, 6-3, 6-0. This win extends Galfi`s impressive winning streak to ten matches.

Galfi`s performance throughout the week in Vic was dominant; she did not lose more than four games in any single set on her way to the title.

Currently, Galfi is arguably in the strongest form of her professional career. A decade after being the junior World No. 1, her win in Vic is projected to move her back into the Top 100 of the PIF WTA Rankings, having been ranked No. 149 just three weeks ago.

In the Vic doubles event, another prominent player who entered via a wild card also found success. 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu partnered with Aldila Sutjiadi.

Andreescu and Sutjiadi secured the Catalonia Open doubles title on Friday, defeating the pair of Lulu Sun and fellow Grand Slam finalist Leylah Fernandez with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
