Olympic semi-finalist Anna Karolina Schmiedlova has announced she is pregnant.
The player, who was formerly ranked World No. 26 and won three WTA Tour titles, has not competed since losing in the Doha qualifying round in February to Varvara Gracheva.
Writing on Instagram recently, the Slovakian player shared the news: “Hello, I just wanted to let you know that the reason I haven`t been playing tournaments or been part of the BJKC team in April is because of my pregnancy. It`s a personal matter for me, but I wanted to share this to avoid any confusion in the coming months. My partner and I are very happy and excited.”
Schmiedlova`s partner is fellow Slovakian tennis professional Lukas Klein, currently ranked No. 173 on the ATP tour.
The 30-year-old Schmiedlova has lifted trophies at Katowice (2015), Bucharest (2015), and Bogota (2018), and reached the fourth round of Roland Garros in 2023. However, her most memorable performances came representing Slovakia, particularly on the Olympic stage where she secured three Top 10 wins, including significant upsets against Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova, reaching the semifinals in Paris last summer. She was also a crucial member of her country`s Billie Jean King Cup team, helping Slovakia reach the final last year.
