Reports indicate veteran point guard Dennis Schröder is expected to sign a three-year contract worth $45 million with the Sacramento Kings. This move marks Schröder`s fourth team since the beginning of last season and his tenth overall NBA team. During the 2024-25 campaign, he played for the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, and Detroit Pistons, averaging 13.1 points, 5.4 assists, and 2.6 rebounds over 75 games.
The addition of the 31-year-old Schröder addresses Sacramento`s immediate need for a point guard. The Kings had been seeking to strengthen this position in free agency this offseason, particularly after trading their star guard De`Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs at the trade deadline last season.
According to reports last week, the Kings had also shown interest in potentially signing Russell Westbrook and Tyus Jones for the point guard spot.
During the recently concluded season (2023-24), Schröder started strong with the Nets, averaging 18.4 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.0 rebounds in 23 starts before being traded to Golden State. After playing just 24 games for the Warriors, he was involved in a complex five-team trade that sent him to the Utah Jazz, a deal also involving Jimmy Butler moving to the Warriors and Andrew Wiggins heading to the Miami Heat. He was then quickly traded again, landing with the Pistons, where he finished the season and participated in the playoffs.
Sacramento faced a crowded backcourt situation entering the offseason, including players like Keon Ellis, Malik Monk, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Devin Carter, and rookie Nique Clifford. Following the trade of De`Aaron Fox, the Kings attempted to use Malik Monk as the starting point guard, a role he took on after beginning the season as a reserve, but this arrangement did not prove successful.
