Naomi Osaka Wins First Title Since 2021 at Saint-Malo WTA 125

This week`s WTA 125 tournaments saw significant results, with Naomi Osaka successfully leveraging a wild card entry in France, while Dalma Galfi and Bianca Andreescu celebrated victories in Spain.

Here’s a look at the key outcomes from the clay-court WTA 125 events this past weekend:

Wild Card Entry Osaka Claims Saint-Malo Title

Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka of Japan secured the first WTA 125 title of her career on Sunday at L`Open 35 de Saint Malo in Saint-Malo, France. She defeated Slovenia`s Kaja Juvan in the final with a score of 6-1, 7-5.

Osaka is a celebrated champion, holding four Grand Slam titles and three other Hologic WTA Tour trophies. However, this victory marks her first singles title at any level since her win at the 2021 Australian Open.

Her success in Saint-Malo came after accepting a wild card into the event as the No. 2 seed. Osaka navigated the draw effectively, dropping only one set each against French competitors Diane Parry and Leolia Jeanjean on her path to the final.

Notably, this was not Osaka`s inaugural WTA 125 final appearance; she was the runner-up at the WTA 125 Hua Hin event in 2015.

Recognition is also due for Kaja Juvan, a former Top 100 player who reached the final. Juvan returned to the tour in January after a 12-month hiatus and quickly made an impact.

In the Saint-Malo doubles final, top seeds Maia Lumsden and Makoto Ninomiya defeated the No. 2 seeds Oksana Kalashnikova and Angelica Moratelli 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday.

Galfi Secures Vic Title, Extends Winning Streak

Hungary`s Dalma Galfi clinched her second WTA 125 title, having won her first just last month in Oeiras. She continued her strong form by winning the Catalonia Open in Vic, Spain.

Galfi defeated Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland 6-3, 6-0 in a dominant performance in Saturday`s final. This victory extends Galfi`s impressive winning streak to 10 consecutive matches.

Her week in Vic was marked by complete dominance, as she did not lose more than four games in any single set throughout the tournament.

Galfi, a former junior World No. 1 from a decade ago, appears to be in the best professional form of her career. Having been ranked No. 149 just three weeks prior, her recent success is expected to propel her back into the Top 100 in the upcoming PIF WTA Rankings.

Adding to the Spanish success stories, 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu also won a title in Vic this week. Partnering with Aldila Sutjiadi, they claimed the doubles title.

Andreescu and Sutjiadi defeated the team of Lulu Sun and fellow Grand Slam finalist Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-4 in the Catalonia Open doubles final on Friday.
