Mavericks Plan to Draft Cooper Flagg After Surprise Lottery Win

Following their surprising trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, the Dallas Mavericks secured the first overall pick in the NBA Draft lottery on Monday. While some speculated about potential follow-up moves, reports indicate the Mavericks plan to keep the pick and select Duke star Cooper Flagg, according to ESPN. Unlike their previous blockbuster deal, this decision suggests stability with the top selection in June.

Cooper Flagg has long been considered the consensus top prospect. However, the Mavericks` previous decision to trade the 25-year-old Dončić for the 31-year-old Anthony Davis suggested a win-now approach. This strategy might have led some to believe Dallas could trade the top pick for another veteran All-Star, potentially even someone like Giannis Antetokounmpo if he became available.

However, according to ESPN`s Tim McMahon, Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont reportedly sees Flagg as a `gift.` This perspective is fitting given the team`s incredibly low odds (just 1.8%) of winning the lottery. Flagg`s potential arrival is seen as a way to address some of the challenges created by the Dončić trade.

Fans had envisioned Dončić as a potential successor to Dirk Nowitzki, a long-term superstar icon for the franchise. The acquisition of the older Davis, already a champion with another team, didn`t resonate with fans in the same way, leading some to become disillusioned. With Flagg, however, the team has a renewed opportunity to draft and develop a young talent who could potentially become a franchise cornerstone for years to come, echoing the Nowitzki legacy.

This lottery fortune arrived at a critical time for Dallas, as the team does not control its first-round draft picks from 2027 through 2030. This year and potentially next were their only realistic opportunities to acquire a high-level prospect via the draft. The previous trade of Dončić for a veteran player, rather than draft assets and younger talent, had made landing a top pick through conventional means less likely. Beating the extremely low odds to secure Flagg is a significant development, and the organization is reportedly embracing this unexpected fortune. Although questions remain about how Flagg will integrate and who will be on the roster alongside him, it is now clear he is expected to join the team. Reports suggest there will not be another surprising blockbuster trade.
