According to sources, Matheus Cunha is a key target for Manchester United as they plan to strengthen their attack under Ruben Amorim this summer.
Cunha, a forward for Wolverhampton Wanderers, has been a standout performer in the Premier League this season. He has an $83.5 million release clause that can be activated in the summer and is expected to leave Wolves. Arsenal and Chelsea have also shown interest in him.
This season, Cunha has scored 14 Premier League goals in 28 games for Wolves, who were battling relegation. This is six more goals than any Manchester United player, highlighting United`s struggles in front of goal. In fact, Amorim`s team has scored 10 fewer goals than Wolves this season and are only ahead of them in 14th place due to a better defense.
Adding more goals to the team is a major priority for United this summer. However, the amount they can invest in attacking players will depend on whether they qualify for Champions League football next season. Their best chance to enter the competition, and European football in general, is by winning the Europa League, where they are in the semifinals against Athletic Bilbao.
Manchester United are also reportedly interested in Ipswich forward Liam Delap and have been linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray. These potential signings wouldn`t necessarily rule out a move for Cunha, who could play as a center forward or in one of the two attacking positions behind the main striker in Amorim`s system.
Cunha has openly expressed his desire to leave Wolves. In March, he stated to The Observer, `I`ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to compete for titles, for significant achievements. I believe I have the potential.`
The 25-year-old joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2023 and has scored 32 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions.
