What began as a highly anticipated day at the Mutua Madrid Open was brought to an abrupt halt on Monday. A widespread power outage affecting parts of Spain, Portugal, and southern France forced the suspension of six matches in the Round of 16.
Only two matches were successfully completed before the interruption: Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic in straight sets, and Mirra Andreeva secured a win against Yuliia Starodubtseva. The remaining matches were scheduled to resume on Tuesday, with results to be updated as they became available.
Completed Matches:
No. 4 Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2
With this win, Gauff has now reached the quarterfinals at every current WTA 1000 event, with the exception of her home tournament in Miami.
No. 7 Mirra Andreeva defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva
Monday`s victory marked the Madrid Open as the first tournament where Andreeva has achieved 10 career wins at a single WTA event.
No. 2 Iga Swiatek defeated No. 13 Diana Shnaider 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4
Swiatek has now reached 17 consecutive clay-court quarterfinals. This impressive streak dates back to her third-round loss to Ashleigh Barty at Madrid four years ago.
No. 5 Madison Keys defeated No. 19 Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3
Keys became only the second American player to achieve 25 or more WTA 1000 match wins on clay, joining Serena Williams (44).
No. 17 Elina Svitolina defeated Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4
Before this season, Svitolina had never won consecutive matches at the Madrid Open in her nine previous appearances.
Moyuka Uchijima defeated No. 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 (5)
Uchijima has now made more WTA quarterfinal appearances in the past two weeks (Rouen and Madrid) than in her entire career prior to this recent run (Monastir in 2022).
