LeBron James is currently focusing on recovering from an MCL injury sustained during the Lakers` recent playoff defeat to the Timberwolves. This recovery is a priority as he considers his contract options for the 2025-26 season. While earlier reports suggested a Grade 2 sprain from Game 5, James hasn`t confirmed the extent of the injury.
Having completed his fifth season with the Los Angeles Lakers, James has several contractual choices: he can play out his current deal, opt out, or sign an extension.
Speaking on the `Mind The Game` podcast with Steve Nash this week, James provided a brief update on his injury, stating, “It`s getting better… Yeah, it`s getting better.”
ESPN`s Brian Windhorst discussed James`s future, noting that while the Lakers seem to be shifting focus towards Luka Doncic, making their future less predictable, James has consistently shown a strong preference for staying and living in Los Angeles. Windhorst believes James is unlikely to leave unless the Lakers fundamentally change their approach towards him, which he considers improbable.
In his 22nd NBA season, James was the Lakers` leading player, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds. Following his last game this season, he remained non-committal about his future.
When asked about potential retirement, James stated he didn`t have an immediate answer. He plans to discuss his future and how long he wishes to continue playing with his family, wife, and support system. He admitted honestly, “I don`t know the answer to that right now… So we`ll see.”
The situation with Luka Doncic, including his upcoming eligibility for a potential four-year, $229 million extension in Los Angeles starting in August, might also influence James`s decision.
James acknowledged the business aspect of the league, stating uncertainty about the team`s roster next season beyond players with guaranteed contracts. He added that he himself has significant personal decisions to consider, which means he is currently unsure about the team`s composition or his own position within it.
