Krueger Victorious Over Fernandez; Paolini Advances as Jabeur Retires in Miami

MIAMI — The Miami Open witnessed an impressive performance from rising American star Ashlyn Krueger and smooth progression for consistent player Jasmine Paolini on Saturday.

Ashlyn Krueger reached the Round of 16 by defeating Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 7-5. She is set to compete against the winner of the match between No. 9 seed Zheng Qinwen and qualifier Taylor Townsend.

The 20-year-old American player matched her best WTA 1000 result, previously achieved in Toronto last year. Krueger has now secured seven victories against Top 30 players this year, surpassing her total from previous seasons. Only Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, and Iga Swiatek have more such wins.

Krueger`s powerful shots were evident in her match against Fernandez. Her serve remained unbroken, and she boasts the third-highest number of winners (69), only behind McCartney Kessler (84) and Hailey Baptiste (78).

Paolini Advances

Earlier in the day, No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini advanced to the Round of 16 when Ons Jabeur, trailing 4-3 in the first set, retired due to a left leg injury.

“She’s a wonderful person, and it’s disheartening to see her injured on the court,” Paolini commented afterwards, expressing hope for Jabeur`s swift recovery.

This victory marked Paolini’s first win against a Top 30 player after five consecutive defeats. The Italian player had a breakthrough year previously, reaching the finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. While last year`s success was unexpected, this year she aims to solidify her position.

“In Miami, yes,” she laughed, acknowledging the significance of her progress. “I’m happy to reach the fourth round – I`ve never won two matches here before.”

The next round presents a potentially tougher challenge. Paolini is scheduled to face the winner of the match between Naomi Osaka and wild card Hailey Baptiste on Monday.

Anticipating a match against Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, Paolini is prepared for a high-intensity game, despite never having played or practiced with her.

“I expect a fast-paced match,” Paolini stated. “I’m anticipating big serves, strong returns, and powerful shots. I need to be focused and consistent throughout every point. It won`t be easy as she’s playing with great speed.”
