Reports suggest MLS club Chicago Fire has emerged as a leading candidate to sign Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne this summer upon the expiry of his contract. According to The Athletic, the Fire, who have shown significant improvement under head coach and general manager Gregg Berhalter, are aiming to make a major acquisition and see De Bruyne as a potential key player.
De Bruyne, a crucial part of City`s success, indicated in April that the current season would likely be his last at the club. Naturally, teams globally would be interested in securing his services. While his discovery rights were previously linked with Inter Miami, signing him would be challenging for the Herons due to their existing quota of designated players.
Consequently, the Chicago Fire reportedly holds the priority position for exclusive negotiations with De Bruyne regarding a potential move. Other MLS teams like D.C. United and New York City FC have also shown interest, though D.C. United is reportedly prioritizing a move for Paul Pogba.
While holding discovery rights gives Chicago Fire exclusive negotiation access within MLS, it doesn`t guarantee De Bruyne will join the league. Interest from Saudi Arabian clubs is reported, and a move to another Premier League team remains a possibility.
Despite currently sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference, the Fire are only two points outside a playoff spot. Striker Hugo Cuypers is performing well, leading the MLS Golden Boot race with seven goals in 10 appearances. Under Gregg Berhalter`s guidance, the team is showing potential, and the addition of a player like De Bruyne could significantly boost their chances of competing for the MLS Cup.
