Gukesh Joins Leaders at Tata Steel Chess Masters After Round 7 Victory

The prestigious Tata Steel Chess Masters tournament, held annually in Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands, reached a critical juncture after the completion of Round 7, which saw significant movement at the top of the leaderboard. Indian Grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh delivered a decisive performance, securing a crucial victory that propelled him into a shared lead as the tournament heads into its pivotal second half.

Gukesh`s key win in Round 7 came against compatriot Pentala Harikrishna. Interestingly, this marked the second time in the tournament Gukesh has overcome a player who served as one of his seconds for the recent 2024 FIDE World Championship. Harikrishna employed the French Defense, an opening known to be a staple of the reigning World Champion Ding Liren. However, Gukesh appeared well-prepared and was not caught off guard by the choice.

Taking control of the game relatively early, Gukesh seized an advantage by move 15 after an imprecise decision by Harikrishna. While the path to victory wasn`t immediately crystal clear even from a better position, Gukesh meticulously improved his pieces and position over the subsequent moves. His persistent strategic pressure eventually paid off, leading to Harikrishna`s resignation on move 45.

This victory was particularly impactful for the standings. Previously, R Praggnanandhaa and Nodirbek Abdusattorov held the sole lead. However, both players drew their respective Round 7 games – Praggnanandhaa against Jordan van Foreest in a relatively quick encounter, and Abdusattorov against Anish Giri. These draws allowed Gukesh to catch up, creating a three-way tie at the top, with all three players now sitting on 5 points.

Beyond the leading group, Round 7 featured two other decisive outcomes. Dutch player Max Warmerdam secured a victory against India`s Arjun Erigaisi, while Vladimir Fedoseev defeated Vincent Keymer.

For Arjun Erigaisi, the tournament continues to be a challenging experience. His loss in Round 7 marked his twentieth consecutive game at the Tata Steel Masters across the 2023 and 2025 editions without registering a win. This difficult run has resulted in a significant drop in his live rating points and, consequently, the loss of his status as India`s top-ranked player in the live rankings.

Other games in Round 7 concluded peacefully. Alongside the draws mentioned earlier, the games between Wei Yi and Leon Luke Mendonca, and Fabiano Caruana against Alexey Sarana also ended in splits.

Looking ahead, Round 8 promises heightened drama, featuring a highly anticipated clash between two of the co-leaders: Dommaraju Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa. This head-to-head encounter could potentially play a significant role in determining the ultimate winner of the 2025 Tata Steel Chess Masters title, setting the stage for a compelling battle.
