Great Britain, Spain, and Ukraine have qualified for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in September. They will compete against hosts China, defending champions Italy, and Kazakhstan.
Ukraine`s team, led by Elina Svitolina, made history by reaching their first-ever Finals. Svitolina defeated Switzerland`s Jil Teichmann (6-4, 6-2), securing Ukraine`s victory in their group. Despite Marta Kostyuk`s unexpected loss to Celine Naef earlier in the tie, Svitolina`s strong performance ensured Ukraine`s qualification. Svitolina expressed her pride and excitement for her team, emphasizing their long wait and determination to compete for the World Cup.
This win was also personally significant for Svitolina, marking her 17th Billie Jean King Cup singles win, tying Elena Tatarkova`s Ukrainian record.
In doubles, Nadiia Kichenok and Katarina Zavatska added to Ukraine`s success by winning against Naef and Susan Bandecchi (6-4, 3-6, [10-5]).
Great Britain also secured a Finals spot with a decisive doubles victory over the Netherlands. Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage, a surprise pairing, won against Demi Schuurs and Suzan Lamens (6-2, 6-2). After each team won a singles match – Sonay Kartal winning for Great Britain and Suzan Lamens for the Netherlands – British captain Anne Keothavong chose Boulter and Burrage for the crucial doubles match. Keothavong praised her team`s performance and confidence.
Spain achieved an upset victory against Czechia. Cristina Busca and Jessica Bouzas Maniero both defeated higher-ranked Czech players. Bucsa defeated Marie Bouzkova (7-5, 6-1), and Bouzas Maniero overcame Linda Noskova (6-4, 6-2).
The United States team, with new players, swept Denmark in Group C. Hailey Baptiste and Bernarda Pera won their singles matches, and Desirae Krawczyk and Asia Muhammad won the doubles. The U.S. will now face Slovakia for another Finals qualifying spot. Canada will compete against Japan in Group A for the final spot.
