Europa League Quarterfinal Showdowns: Manchester United, Tottenham in Focus

The Europa League quarterfinals are reaching their conclusion, with all ties finely balanced. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are under particular pressure to progress, as success in this competition could be crucial for their seasons. The ultimate goal is the final in Bilbao on May 21st.

Lazio faces a tough task, needing to overturn a two-goal deficit against Bodo/Glimt at home after a difficult away leg. However, their previous European performances suggest they have a good chance of doing so. This is the only quarterfinal where one team holds a lead after the first leg, with all other matches level.

Athletic Club`s continued presence in the tournament raises the possibility of a home final in Bilbao. Despite a draw against Rangers in Scotland, they will be expected to secure victory in the home leg.

For Tottenham, injuries are again a concern, with Son Heung-min unavailable for the away match against Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. Frankfurt, despite some changes in their squad, proved a difficult opponent for Tottenham in London. Tottenham`s precarious position in the Premier League (15th place) means this Europa League fixture could be pivotal for manager Ange Postecoglou`s future. Pressure has been mounting throughout the tournament, and it will intensify as they advance.

Manchester United, while perhaps not under the same level of immediate pressure as Tottenham, are expected to compete in the Champions League annually. Winning the Europa League may be their most realistic path to Champions League qualification. Failure to do so could hinder their summer recruitment plans under manager Ruben Amorim. They conceded a late goal against Lyon in the first leg, highlighting the need for improved focus, especially at home.
