Elina Svitolina Claims Rouen Title, Ending Two-Year Wait

Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, the top-ranked player in the tournament, celebrated her first championship in almost two years on Sunday. She lifted the trophy at the WTA 250 Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole.

Svitolina defeated No. 3 seed Olga Danilovic from Serbia with a score of 6-4, 7-6(8). The intense final match lasted for 1 hour and 58 minutes and was played on the indoor clay courts of Rouen, France.

In the exciting second set tiebreak, Svitolina fought off two set points when trailing 6-4. She then seized her fourth championship point to win the match.

This victory improves Svitolina`s impressive record in WTA singles finals. The former World No. 3 has now reached 22 finals in her career at the tour level, winning 18 of them.

Back to winning ways: Svitolina returned from maternity leave and won the Strasbourg title in May 2023, just under two months later. However, she hadn`t won another title until this week.

Since Strasbourg, Svitolina had only reached one final, finishing as runner-up in Auckland in January 2024. In that final, she was narrowly defeated in three sets by Coco Gauff.

But in her first appearance at the Rouen tournament, everything clicked for Svitolina. She secured the title without losing a single set throughout the week. Notably, seven of her 18 titles have been won on clay courts.
