Alexandra Eala`s remarkable journey at the Miami Open continues as she progresses to the quarterfinals.
The young player from the Philippines achieved her first ever quarterfinal in a Hologic WTA Tour event without playing on Monday. This was due to Paula Badosa, the No. 10 seed, withdrawing from their scheduled fourth-round match because of a lower back injury.
Eala, a wild card entry, and Badosa were set to compete after both had secured impressive third-round victories on Sunday. Eala, currently ranked No. 140 in the world, defeated No. 5 seed and Australian Open champion Madison Keys, marking a historic milestone for a player from the Philippines in the Open Era. Badosa had previously won a hard-fought match against Clara Tauson, the No. 20 seed and recent Dubai finalist, 6-3, 7-6(3), despite needing a medical timeout during the game.

Eala, aged 19 and the 2022 junior US Open champion, had not won three consecutive matches at any tour-level event before this tournament. It should be noted that receiving a walkover from Badosa will not be counted in her official win-loss record.
Competing in her sixth WTA 1000 event, Eala is now preparing to face the winner of the Monday night match between No. 2 seed and former champion Iga Swiatek or No. 23 seed Elina Svitolina for a chance to reach the semifinals.
