Former NBA MVP Derrick Rose recently commented on the New York Knicks` decision to fire head coach Tom Thibodeau. This move concluded Thibodeau`s tenure after he guided the team to their initial appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals in a quarter-century. Rose has a significant history with Thibodeau, having played under him for a substantial part of his career with the Chicago Bulls before rejoining him on the Knicks roster towards the end of his playing days.
While speaking to reporters in Chicago, Rose indicated that, despite the circumstances, Thibodeau is reportedly in good spirits. Rose also conveyed optimism regarding the Knicks` prospects following Thibodeau`s dismissal, highlighting the performance and leadership of All-Star guard Jalen Brunson as key factors for the team`s future.
“He`s doing well. Honestly, it`s hard to be upset when you`re leaving with a $30 million settlement. You can`t feel too bad for him,” Rose stated. “But he`s genuinely in good spirits. That`s my guy, our bond lasts forever. He`s fine, Jalen is still with the Knicks and will continue playing exceptionally well. It feels like a situation where everyone benefits, in my opinion.”
Rose was back in his hometown of Chicago, serving as the grand marshal for the recent NASCAR Chicago Street Race, where he gave the command to start engines for the Cup Series event. A native of Chicago, Rose was the first overall pick by the Bulls in the 2008 NBA Draft. He achieved notable success during his time there, including being named NBA MVP in 2011, earning three All-Star selections, and receiving All-NBA First-Team honors. The Bulls plan to retire his No. 1 jersey during the 2025-26 season.
