David Beckham reveals Manchester United first agreed to sell him to Barcelona before 2003 move to Real Madrid

David Beckham recently shared details surrounding his high-profile transfer from Manchester United in 2003. Speaking about the move, which saw him join Real Madrid, he shared that his initial destination was actually planned to be FC Barcelona. Beckham`s eventual transfer to Real Madrid was a landmark moment, particularly for English football, marking a major star`s move to Spain`s biggest club. However, he disclosed that this outcome only happened because he personally intervened after being told he was being sold to Barcelona.

He recounted receiving the call from Manchester United informing him of the club`s decision to sell him, and being told that Barcelona was the intended destination. As his personal ambition was to play for Real Madrid, this proposed move was unacceptable to him. Beckham stated clearly that if he was going to be transferred to a Spanish club, it must be Real Madrid. Following his insistence, Manchester United successfully negotiated and quickly finalized the transfer to Real Madrid, as they say, the rest is history.

During his four seasons with the La Liga giants, Beckham made 158 appearances, scoring 20 goals. He was part of the team that won La Liga in 2007, playing a crucial role in that title win, and also lifted the Spanish Super Cup. Throughout this period, Beckham remained a key player for the England national team, representing the Three Lions in the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 World Cup.

He reflected that his career path would have been significantly different if the initial transfer plan to Barcelona had gone ahead without his intervention.
