Damian Lillard is still sidelined with a blood clot in his right calf, but there`s growing optimism in Milwaukee. Bucks coach Doc Rivers recently told reporters that the team is now “much more hopeful” about Lillard playing again this season. This positive update comes after a promising medical report.
“We are significantly more hopeful today than we were just a few days ago,” Rivers stated before their victory against the Philadelphia 76ers. “We are exploring every possible avenue to help him return to the court.”
Lillard has missed the Bucks` last eight games. Coach Rivers mentioned earlier that Lillard might join the team on their road trip, but that ultimately didn`t happen. The decision was made to avoid any potential complications from travel that could affect his recovery.
The Bucks have had a mixed record of 4 wins and 4 losses during Lillard`s absence. Their current season record is 42-34, placing them fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, trailing the Indiana Pacers by three games. The Detroit Pistons are also at 42-34 and are the Bucks` final two regular-season opponents.
Despite the encouraging signs regarding Lillard`s potential return, Rivers emphasized that the team remains focused on improving their performance without him, particularly when Giannis Antetokounmpo is resting.
“We are constantly working on strategies for when Giannis is off the court,” Rivers explained. “I acknowledge that I need to do a better job in this area, and we are committed to improvement.”
Upcoming games for the Bucks include matchups against the Miami Heat and the New Orleans Pelicans on the road, followed by home games against the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Pelicans again, before concluding the regular season with two games against Detroit.
