Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal win UEFA Nations League title over Lamine Yamal and Spain in dramatic shootout

Portugal has claimed the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League title, defeating rivals Spain 5-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The match had ended in a 2-2 draw after regular time. Following their semifinal victory against Germany earlier in the week, Portugal makes history as the first national team to win the UEFA Nations League tournament twice since its inauguration. Spain`s hopes were dashed when striker Alvaro Morata missed a crucial penalty, allowing Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves to convert the subsequent spot-kick and secure the trophy for Portugal with a 5-3 shootout scoreline.

Spain, managed by Luis de la Fuente, initially took the lead through an early goal from Martin Zubimendi. However, Portugal quickly responded, leveling the score in the 26th minute with Nuno Mendes finding the net after receiving an assist from Pedro Neto. Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain`s advantage before halftime. The match was pulled level once more in the 61st minute by Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored with a far-post finish. This goal marked his 938th career goal across all competitions for both club and country.

This triumph represents Cristiano Ronaldo`s third major international trophy with Portugal, adding to the UEFA Euro 2016 title and their win in the inaugural 2019 edition of the Nations League. Ronaldo appeared visibly emotional at the end of the final against Spain. He was seen embracing coach Roberto Martinez post-match in celebration and sharing the moment with the jubilant Portugal supporters in the stands.
