AC Milan`s sporting director, Igli Tare, appointed last summer to initiate a new phase for the club after a disappointing season that saw them miss out on European qualification, recently addressed the media. He discussed the summer transfer strategy, specifically mentioning American players Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic. The club`s new direction also includes the return of former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri, who previously coached Milan from 2010 to 2014, securing a Serie A title in 2010-11.
Regarding Yunus Musah, whose potential departure this summer is being discussed, Tare clarified the club`s position.
Tare stated, “I view Musah as an excellent player. However, our current project under coach Allegri requires specific midfield profiles, particularly deep-lying midfielders for a three-man setup. Musah doesn`t quite fit this profile, although he can play in different midfield formations. This is the primary reason for our desire to make a change in this area.”
He added about recruitment, “We plan to add another midfielder and a striker. Full-back positions will also be strengthened with a right back and a left back signing. If there are sales, we will also look to sign new wingers and central defenders. Our focus is on building the strongest possible squad to compete at the highest level.”
In contrast to Musah`s uncertain future, Christian Pulisic is seen as a fundamental player in AC Milan`s plans, according to both Tare and Allegri. Tare confirmed, “Pulisic is designated as a key player for the upcoming season. Contract discussions with CEO Giorgio Furlani will happen when appropriate, but our current priority is the team`s preparation. I believe he was among our best performers last season and is a cornerstone for the next; his role in the squad is central.”
Over his two seasons at AC Milan, Musah`s versatility saw him deployed in various midfield roles (central, right-central) and occasionally even as an attacking winger or right-back. While this allowed him to feature in 80 games, it perhaps hindered his ability to establish a consistent, key role in the starting lineup. Christian Pulisic, conversely, enjoyed a highly productive season, tallying 17 goals and 12 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, cementing his status as one of the team`s standout performers.
