2025 NBA Draft Order and Lottery Probabilities

The 2024-25 NBA regular season is over, meaning teams that didn`t make the playoffs are done playing until next season. While the top teams compete for the championship, others are focused on the upcoming NBA Draft in June. With the regular season concluded, the draft order is becoming clearer, though not entirely finalized yet.

The NBA draft doesn`t strictly follow regular season standings for all picks. While picks 15-30 are based on team records, the top 14 picks are decided by a lottery. Now that the regular season is finished, we know the 10 teams out of playoff contention and their chances in the lottery.

After these lottery teams, the final order depends on the Play-In Tournament results. The four Play-In teams that don`t advance to the playoffs will get picks 11-14. Following that, the 16 playoff teams are ranked by their regular season record. Ties in record are resolved by a random draw before the lottery.

So, what`s the current 2025 NBA Draft order? Below is the information we have so far, keeping in mind that the mid-first-round picks are still to be determined.

When is the NBA Draft Lottery?

The 2025 NBA Draft Lottery will take place on May 12th. This is when we will find out the draft positions for top prospects like Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper. Currently, a significant part of the draft order is set. The remaining middle section will be decided this week as teams seeded 7-10 in each conference compete in the Play-In Tournament for a playoff spot. Winners advance, while losers receive higher draft picks.

It`s notable that very few playoff teams actually control their original draft picks. Among teams outside the Play-In Tournament, only the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics still hold their original picks. This reflects the current NBA trend of teams going “all-in,” where draft picks are traded for experienced players. These teams are now experiencing the consequences of those trades.

Overall, more than half of the first-round picks could change teams before the draft even begins. Adding to this the trades that happen during the draft itself, most teams outside of the lottery no longer use their own original picks. This current order is just a snapshot in time, and many more changes are expected before the final draft.
